The PCIe® Gen6 ecosystem is taking off!

Jeremy Werner | February 2025

In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, staying ahead of the curve is not just an advantage — it's a necessity. At Micron, we pride ourselves on being at the forefront of innovation, and our recent strides in the PCIe® Gen6 ecosystem are a testament to our commitment to driving technology forward.

The PCIe Gen6 ecosystem is rapidly gaining momentum, and Micron is leading the charge with our groundbreaking PCIe Gen6 NVMe™ SSD technology. As the first to develop these high-performance SSDs, we are setting the stage for a new era of data storage and management, enabling faster, more efficient and more reliable solutions for the artificial intelligence (AI) industry and beyond.

A collaborative effort

Our success in the PCIe Gen6 ecosystem is not a solitary achievement. It’s the result of a collaborative effort with industry leaders like Broadcom and Teledyne LeCroy. Together, we have successfully validated our PCIe Gen6 solutions with the latest pre-compliance test suite to ensure rapid maturity of interoperability.

Watch the Broadcom PCIe Gen 6 video here.

Broadcom's end-to-end PCIe Gen6 portfolio — which includes its high-port switch and retimer — is key to unlocking the performance possible in next generation AI infrastructure. The collaboration with Teledyne LeCroy has further solidified our position, as their Summit M64 Protocol Analyzer is leading the way in delivering a PCIe Gen6 compliance test.

AI innovation

The AI industry is at the cusp of a major transformation, and PCIe Gen6 interconnect is poised to play a pivotal role in this evolution. Hyperscalers and system ODM/OEMs are now designing next-generation AI rack solutions based on Broadcom's PCIe Gen6 connectivity portfolio. This portfolio — which features extended reach, lower power dissipation, simplified interoperability and end-to-end management — is powering scalable and power-efficient interconnect solutions for the open AI infrastructure ecosystem.

Micron's PCIe Gen6 NVMe SSDs are a critical component of this ecosystem. Our SSDs, combined with Broadcom's high-port switch, serve as the building blocks for PCIe Gen6 AI storage. This powerful combination is enabling the AI industry to achieve new heights of performance and efficiency, driving innovation and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

The virtuous performance cycle

The Virtuous Performance Cycle

The cycle of eliminating bottlenecks in data center infrastructure is accelerating rapidly. The industry is introducing solutions such as liquid cooling, increased data center and rack power density, faster AI accelerators, and enhanced Micron memory and SSDs. Critical to this progress is faster interconnectivity, including rack-to-rack networking led by Ethernet and internal device-to-device connectivity led by PCIe. The PCIe Gen6 ecosystem is leveraging lessons from the slower-than-expected PCIe Gen5 rollout to advance at unprecedented speeds.

A look ahead

As we look to the future, we’re excited about the potential of PCIe Gen6 NVMe SSDs. Our technical leadership and contributions are driving technology forward, and we’re proud to be at the forefront of this transformative journey. Our work to help bring this technology to market and to partner with software enablement partners such as NVIDIA and WEKA demonstrates our commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation and feeding our desire to deliver cutting-edge solutions for our customers!

Stay tuned as we continue to lead the charge in the PCIe Gen6 ecosystem. The future is bright — and we are just getting started.
