On June 4, 2020, Micron announced the UV Robot Design Challenge to address the growing need for reliable, low-cost ultraviolet-light robotic solutions that can help automate disinfection and potentially combat the spread of COVID-19 and other diseases. We invite aspiring engineers, inventors and professionals in robotics or machine learning to design a complete solution through a collaborative, open-source approach.
UV light has been shown to destroy the RNA in viruses and can reduce the transmission of microbes, which can remain active on surfaces for long periods of time.
Micron’s UV Robot Design Challenge is intended to produce innovative and highly cost-effective solutions that can have an impact against COVID-19 and other pathogen-borne diseases.
If I’m interested, how can I participate?
We invite you to be part of the collaboration. Join us on our design challenge site — Hackster.io — by registering and agreeing to the rules and timeline for the challenge.

What is the latest information about the UV Robot University Design Challenge?
Micron’s University challenge and Global Hackster.io contest for designing a UV Robot to combat the spread of the COVID- 19 virus is in high gear now!
On Friday, July 31, The University Challenge presentations started with Georgia Tech University. The students fondly named the Robot SAM (Sanitation Assistance Machine). This Machine was designed with autonomous operation, a main pole with UV lights, as well as 4 additional arms to assist in disinfection. The Micron team and outside partners are currently working on judging and communication back to Georgia Tech University students. The 7 other universities will finish and present their designs before the end of September.
What is the latest with the UV Robot Design Contest Now?
The Hackster.io contest has over 300 participants from 45 countries. There are 43 drafts of projects, and 10 of those show that they are 100% completed. Four projects have been submitted already.
The 4 submitted designs are pictured below. They are very different from each other and very unique. The judging is going to be exciting!
What else is Micron doing to prevent the spread of COVID-19?
Besides the UV Robot, the COVID-19 Technology Task Force, has been working on surface and air treatments to keep Micron team members and the community safe.
