New Micron 2200 PCIe SSD delivers NVMe™ to go

Shawn Adams | March 2019

At Micron, we know SSDs like the back of our NAND. That’s why we’re proud to announce the new Micron® 2200 PCIe™ SSD with NVMe™. It’s a fast, lean, mean PCIe SSD that’s revolutionizing computing on the go. The Micron 2200 SSD is our new client drive featuring support for the NVM Express™ (NVMe™) protocol, delivering up to 1TB of fast NVMe storage for intense computing workloads on laptops, desktops, and workstation PCs.

Looking to enhance the client computing experience through improved responsiveness by instantly accessing files? NVMe SSDs like the Micron 2200 SSD address these needs better compared to rotating media, and the 2200 SSD also offers competitive pricing, reliability and performance.

Get on-board the NVMe train

With this expansion into the laptop NVMe space, Micron’s 2200 SSD offers four lanes of enhanced PCIe speed, making it ideal for client computing that demands results. NVMe offers a more efficient protocol versus SATA. NVMe design brings storage physically closer to the processor, to reduce latency, and enables parallel read/write request processing, something difficult or impossible with hard disk drives (HDDs). The Dynamic Write Acceleration feature enables burst data writes offering the highest performance possible without decreasing user capacity.

NVMe’s PCIe interface also offers scalable performance and proven industry stability. And mobile users benefit from NVMe’s support of self-governing power states to improve battery life.

Not only can the 2200 SSD protect itself with temperature monitors, those same monitors extend thermal protection to other components inside the system. NVMe host-controlled thermal management (HCTM) allows the host to optimize the SSD’s temperature based on its current workload, further reducing the drive's operating temperature.

Bring flexibility to your deployments with the 2200

Consider the person whose portable device must handle demanding applications like high-end video editing and content management. Making a laptop affordable and power efficient often omits the capabilities needed for a portable workstation-quality device. The Micron 2200 PCIe SSD delivers the compact and increased performance to maximize demanding workloads and tasks.

The increased demand for capacity and performance at a cost-effective price point and power budget also makes client SSDs an attractive option for hyperscale companies. They can get a boot drive solution that delivers mainstream NVMe performance and efficiency at a price point comparable to SATA.

Look to Micron for value

The Micron 2200 SSD delivers up to 1TB flash storage and up to 3,000 MB/second sequential reads and 1,600 MB/second sequential writes at a competitive price. It enables high performance with bandwidth and includes the headroom to meet new challenges. Available in a M.2 form factor, about the size of a stick of gum, the Micron 2200 SSD helps to keep designs for laptops and mobile workstations sleeker, lighter and faster.

Depend on Micron SSD innovation

The Micron 2200 PCIe™ NVMe SSD is a vertically integrated solution - including 3D TLC NAND, ASIC controller, and firmware in an M.2 form factor. This solution allows Micron to address growing needs across original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and broader client markets for NVMe storage class drives.

Compelling choices in our client SSD portfolio

We recently also launched the Micron SATA 1300 SSD to our client computing portfolio, spoiling you with options! The speed of NVMe protocols on PCIe connectors? You got it. Or, familiar SATA interfaces so you can upgrade from HDD to SSD in a phased, graceful way? Choose the 1300 SSD. M.2 form factor and/or 2.5-inch? Yes! Both the Micron 2200 and 1300 SSDs offer capacity sweet spots and compelling price points to bring flash storage in reach for all.
